Sleeping

We have been so lucky that Grant came out knowing the difference between night and day. They only difficult thing with sleeping is that he would not sleep during the day. Well he would sleep for like 15 min to a half an hour and then be up for another 2-3 hours. I eventually got him to sleep for longer naps during the day by my favorite machine: the swing.

Although my day naps I have had to work at, his night time sleeping has been a breeze. When he was about 2 weeks old he slept for 5 hours. I was shocked when he woke up and I found that he had slept for so long. What has helped to make sure that he does this EVERY night was a little remedy my (Angela's) parents did for all of their kids and taught to us.

We picked a time every night that we want him to go to sleep. Most of the time it is at 10 (I set my feeding schedule for every 3 hours so I feed him at 1,4,7,& 10). So from 7 until 10 we keep him up. He gets really cranky so we allow him to have a 10 minute nap at about 9:00 but he usually stays cranky for about 30min-1 hour. Some of our family thinks that I am mean but it sure feels nice for the both of us to sleep for 6 hours OR MORE (he has slept for 9 hours a few nights) straight every night! So at about 9:45 we give him a warm bath (we also dim the lights where we give him a bath) and then we rub him down with lotion (like a greased pig). At 10:00 we then feed him and he is out for 6 hours. It works every time. I suppose we have been lucky to have a boy that will sleep for most of the night which may make this remedy work extra well but I truly believe what my parents have taught us has brought sanity into our home!

  1. Enjoy it while it lasts, he'll relapse once he becomes more self-aware. Or maybe you'll be lucky and he'll be fine, here's hoping!
